The Gates Foundation and the World Mosquito Program: partners in change | World Mosquito Program Skip to main content

The World Mosquito Program (WMP) is a not-for-profit group of companies owned by Monash University that works to protect the global community from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever and chikungunya. We have projects operating in 16 countries and our Wolbachia mosquitoes have protected around 16 million people (January 2026).

Since releasing the first Wolbachia mosquitoes in 2011, evidence from international pilot studies shows that we can use Wolbachia more broadly to decrease the risk of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmitting viruses. Multiple trials in various locations demonstrate that our method is a safe and effective way to help prevent the spread of diseases across entire cities and regions.

The World Mosquito Program worked with the Gates Foundation and a range of other partners to demonstrate what our Wolbachia method could achieve - scalable, sustainable, non-GMO, and safe for people and the planet. The results in Colombia's Aburrá Valley, where dengue incidence has dropped by 95–97% since Wolbachia became established, are a testament to what that collaboration helped make possible.

Together with our partners, past and present, we have protected millions of people around the world from mosquito-borne diseases. Our work continues today, supported by governments, foundations, and philanthropic partners across 15 countries.
